Food Bank Welcome Volunteer

Join our team in fostering a welcoming and supportive environment for food bank participants! This role is ideal for friendly, community-minded individuals who enjoy engaging with people and making a meaningful impact. 

Volunteer responsibilities:

  • Set up and maintain a welcome station with warm beverages and snacks
  • Greet participants and create a welcoming atmosphere
  • Assist new participants in navigating food distribution and available resources
  • Support with setting up and cleaning up welcome station
  • Engage with community members in a respectful and compassionate manner

Volunteer qualifications:

  • Friendly, welcoming, patient, and able to engage with diverse communities
  • Comfortable standing and moving around during shifts
  • Willing to support with light setup and cleanup tasks
  • Passionate about food justice and community support

Availability: Tuesdays 11:30-2:30, Thursday 2:30-6:30 or Friday 10:30-1:30

Food Bank volunteers

We are looking for extra weekly volunteers in our food bank. Tasks will include preparing food bags and boxes for delivery. 

Availability: Weekly shifts: Tuesday 10-12, Wednesdays 11-1, Thursday 9-11. 1st and 3rd Wednesdays 8:30-12.

Mobile Pantry volunteer

Help pack the mobile pantry, head out with a staff member to our outreach site, setup and assist distribution and then pack up and back to the food bank.

Volunteer qualifications:

  • Over 18 years of age
  • Able to lift 25 pounds and agile enough to get in and out of the mobile pantry
  • Comfortable working with a diverse community of participants in person
  • Patient, empathetic and good customer service skills

Availability: 1st and 3rd Wednesday of the month, 2:30-5 pm

Family programs support: Family Resource Center, Roosevelt

We are looking for a volunteer to support our programs at our Family Resource Center in Roosevelt. Tasks will include preparing diaper bundles for distribution, donation sorting and keeping our printed information stocked up.

Availability: Wednesdays 12-2

Family Resource Center volunteer

Help families by volunteering at our Family Resource Center in the Roosevelt neighborhood. This role will support our Community Closet and diaper program during our drop-in hours. The Community Closet is a program that allows participants to shop freely for children’s items. Volunteer tasks for this role are receiving and sorting donations, stocking and tidying the closet, and distributing diapers and referring participants to staff for further resources.

Volunteer qualifications:

  • Over 18 years of age
  • Comfortable working with a diverse community of families in-person
  • Ability to be relational, empathetic and patient
  • Customer service skills
  • Organizational skills are helpful
  • Able to lift at least 25 pounds

Availability: 2nd and 4th Friday of the month, 11-2

Spanish Playgroup Helper

Our Spanish playgroup is so successful and busy, our staff need a little extra help! We are looking for a Spanish speaking volunteer to help prep for playgroup, lend a hand during playgroup and then there’s the clean-up after. This volunteer role is at our Family Resource Center in the Roosevelt neighborhood.

Volunteer qualifications:

  • Spanish speaking
  • Over 18 years of age
  • Comfortable working with a diverse community of families and caregivers in-person and must love kids
  • Ability to be relational, empathetic and patient
  • Willing to learn about FamilyWorks to help answer questions and happy to refer participants to staff for further resources

Availability: Tuesdays 9:30-12, weekly commitment

Family Resource Center volunteer: on-call

We would like to build an on-call pool of volunteers to provide cover when our regular Resource Center volunteers are out. Volunteer tasks for this role are receiving and sorting donations, stocking and tidying the closet, and distributing diapers and referring participants to staff for further resources. After initial onboarding, we use online sign-up sheets for easy self-assignment. Perfect for those that would like to support families but need a flexible volunteering schedule.

  • Over 18 years of age
  • Comfortable working with a diverse community of families in-person
  • Ability to be relational, empathetic and patient
  • Customer service skills
  • Organizational skills are helpful
  • Able to lift at least 25 pounds

Availability: Wednesdays 2-5 or Fridays 11-2

Home delivery volunteer

We would like to add another route to our home food delivery program. This volunteer would be delivering food to multiple addresses in North Seattle using their own transport. The role would involve access to homes via stairs and food bags weighing approximately 15 lbs. 

Availability: Weekly on Thursdays, picking up bags from the food bank at around 11 am

On-call Food Bank volunteer roles

If you need more flexibility in your schedule, we have a variety of on-call volunteer positions available. These volunteers provide cover if our regular volunteers are unavailable. On-call volunteer roles include:

  • Food rescue (driver and helper roles)
  • Set-up, distribution, and participant intake
  • Mobile Food Pantry helper
  • Home delivery driver

Availability: Volunteer shifts are Tuesday-Friday, ranging from 8-3 pm or 8-6 pm on Thursdays. After initial onboarding, we use online sign-up sheets for easy self-assignment. To find the right on-call role for you, contact our Volunteer Coordinator, Kat Johnson.

Supermarket Saturday Food Drives will be back April 2025! ​

Our food drives are a very important way to stock our Food Bank. The event involves interacting with shoppers and informing them of the non-perishable foods the Food Bank needs. Donations are then gratefully collected.

When: The fourth Saturday of the month from 10 am to 1 pm, in one-hour shifts.
Where: Wallingford QFC, 1801 N 45th St.

Reading Buddies

Encourage and support a love of books by reading with elementary students. Reading Buddies runs while school is in session at Cedar Crossing in the Roosevelt neighborhood.

Volunteers must be over 18 years old.
